Trips

Trips and eventsAuckland Speleo Group runs a variety of trips, catering for all abilities from beginners upwards in terms of both general caving and rope skills. From almost dry walk-through caves to challenging vertical systems with waterfalls and rope descents, we visit all the caves that New Zealand has to offer.

It is important that you contact the trip leader as early as possible to register your interest and guarantee yourself a place. Some trips have restricted numbers of participants and trips will only go ahead if there are sufficient numbers. The club welcomes new members and takes an interest in training and developing their caving skills.

Lembergs Cave

October 13, 2018 - October 14, 2018

Natalie is organizing, Pete is “an independent caver who may help out if he wants to”, everyone else wants to come!
Description/level: A few climbs but this cave is suitable for beginners who are good on their feet. There are a few optional exposed climbs to make it intermediate level if you choose. Non-SRT.
There will be socializing around the fire on Saturday evening.
Location: Waitomo, staying at the hut as per usual.
Gear: Old clothes and shoes/gumboots (may get muddy, torn and wet). Helmet and light and spare batteries essential (you can hire these from the club, email me). Gloves recommended. Day pack with lunch, water and first aid kit.
Friends of members who can look after themselves are welcome to join. General public will need to join the club before joining the trip. Note that the membership can take a few weeks to process (I am not involved in this process), so please sign up to the club early to avoid disappointment.
Details of the trip are available on the Facebook event that has been advertised via the closed group “Auckland Speleo Group”. Once you become a member you can request access to this Facebook group and find the event.
Those members not on Facebook are welcome to email me and I can provide you with the details of where to meet ect during the week of the trip.
If you would like to discuss the trip via phone, please email me with your phone number and I will give you a call.
See you all there!

Trip Leader

The trip leader helps get all the basics of the trip in place.

1. Getting permission from the land owner and finding out any special protocols for visiting the cave.

2. Obtaining the cave location.

3. Coordinating transport to the location and car-pooling on private property.

4. Getting a list of participants, including checking if the trip is suitable for them and setting a group limit if needed.

5. Ensuring the equipment needed for the cave is taken, including a first aid kit.

6. Having an emergency call-out person.

7. Setting an estimated time the group will be out of the cave.

8. Letting the call-out person know when they have finished the trip (and sometimes often the land owner as well).
